Asphalt Milling

Proudly Serving Greater Danbury, Ridgefield, Brookfield CT & Nearby

Asphalt Milling is used for removing at least part of the surface of a paved area such as a road, bridge, or parking lot. Milling removes just enough thickness to level and smooth the surface to a full depth removal. The milled asphalt is recycled and reused in future paving projects. Once the milling machine has removed the asphalt to the desired width and depth, the surface is swept and cleaned. This removes dust and debris that might cause problems with the new asphalt bonding to the surface. It is the most cost effective and efficient approach for asphalt rehabilitation when the entire surface of the asphalt is in disrepair while the sub base is still in good condition.

Why You Might Need Asphalt Milling:

  • The pavement has potentially started to “unravel” from the top down
  • Surface cracking has allowed water to penetrate into the pavement and cause deterioration
  • Potholes taking over the roads/streets, damaging a plethora of cars and tires
  • The asphalt pavement is in a critical drainage area and drainage swales need to be cut into the pavement so the surface can be reshaped, allowing water to drain properly
  • Pavement shows signs of low and moderate severity alligator cracks (Could be caused by overloading traffic or loss of base, subbase or subgrade support)

Different Types of Asphalt:

  • Hot Asphalt: The type of asphalt that you mostly see when driving past a construction crew. It is mostly used for paving and patching, and done with very high temperatures. Hot Asphalt is a permanent solution to a problem, but must be used almost immediately after purchasing. As the asphalt cools, it becomes increasingly difficult to work with, and once completely cool, it hardens like a rock.
  • MC Cold Mix is asphalt that can be used as a temporary fix. Since the asphalt is used at cooler temperatures, it is slow to cure and best used in areas that have little to no traffic.
  • UPM is also a cold mix asphalt, but unlike MC Cold Mix, it can be used as a permanent fix to any asphalt or concrete problem, Designed to work in any weather condition, UPM can be used to fix both wet and dry holes, allowing you to make any repair in any situation.

Benefits of Asphalt Milling:

  • Restores pavement to a uniform cross-section and longitudinal profile.
  • Restores drainage flow
  • Looks better overall and lasts longer
  • Restores curb-reveal for roadways and parking areas that have had numerous overlays
  • Restores pavement in a quick and efficient manner by saving energy and time
  • Public convenience
  • Reduced cost compared to other procedures
  • Beneficial for noise reduction on the streets
